Tributyl(2-methoxyethyl)phosphonium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (1) is an ionic liquid developed by Itoh et al. It is extremely useful as an organic reaction solvent. For example, it permits the use of strongly basic aliphatic Grignard reagents, which are poorly suited for use with general ionic liquids, and gives the corresponding products in high yields.1) In this reaction, 1 is recoverable and recyclable and has attracted attention as a useful ionic liquid.
