Cyclen-catalyzed Henry reaction (nitroaldol reaction)

Typical procedure: Nitromethane (122 mg) is added to the solution of benzaldehyde (106 mg) in THF (1 mL). Then, cyclen (8.6 mg) is added. The solution is stirred at room temperature for 24 h. Volatile components are removed under reduced pressure and the residue is purified by chromatography on silica gel (eluent: pentane/diethyl ether) to give 2-nitro-1-phenylethanol (134 mg, 80 %).
